2020 In the Rear View Mirror!


 

2020 was a year that many will not want to remember, but 2021 is not shaping up too well so far!  Here we are only 11 days in, and already we have had riots at the Capitol in Washington DC, rapidly accelerating cases (and deaths) from Covid19,  and a "historic" snow storm in southeast Texas!

In 2017 we saw a dusting of snow, which was soon gone.  Yesterday we had between 2 inches and 6 inches depending on location within a 50 mile radius!  Children and adults are posting snow pictures all over Social Media, building snowmen, making impromptu sleds from tea trays or whatever they can find; some dogs are frolicking, others are refusing to go outside, feral cats are hiding out, who knows where.  All I know is that they are not patrolling the neighborhood and controlling the mice!  One, or more, evidently found it's way into my dining room where I had a bowl of freshly picked Blood Oranges on the table.  Who knew mice liked oranges?  Not I!  


I had enough snow and ice when I lived in Canada, and now I'm ready for another hot summer and beaches and swimming pools, no more riots and Covid19, and being able to enjoy my friends, family and garden.

"KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PLANTING" - LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT THE HERB "COMFREY".

  "KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PLANTING"      This is my first time to grow Comfrey ( Symphytum officinale) but I have long been aware of its magical properties when used as a “compost tea”.   If you look closely, it appears that there is a flower bud forming already in the center of the plant.   It grew very quickly to this size, but thinking it would become a very tall plant, I’m surprised it hasn’t grown more.   Being an avid jam & jelly maker, who also dabbles in salves, vinegars and all sorts of things, I was alarmed to read that Comfrey is now considered “potentially dangerous” because the leaves contain small amounts of an alkaloid that can cause liver damage and probably should not be taken internally even though they are rich in nutrients.   Comfrey is also known as Boneset, healing herb, knitbone and has been used since ancient times for medicinal purposes.
