Fragrant Summer Evenings

  September 3 rd and at 6:00 pm it is still 87F; there is no wind, and fragrance fills the air.  After an unusually frigid winter when many plants and shrubs froze to death, an unusually wet spring, when those that survived drowned, and an unusually dry summer, the following surely win accolades for never giving up!!!  There are so many layers of fragrance these warm, (well hot), still evenings, that sometimes it is necessary to go from flower to flower like a bee to sort them all out.  Here are a few that will delight the human and the bee!!    Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells, Esperanza)   Lagerostroemia indica (Crape – or Crepe – Myrtle)   Passiflora incarnata (Passion vine) Hemerocallis fulva Flor Pleno (Daylily)   Aloysia virgata (Almond Verbena)   New fig leaves – this one might be a surprise, but fig leaves have a very pleasant aroma.      They can also be used to make a delightful “Fig Leaf Liqueur” when c...
